A psychologist is a professional trained in the study of human behavior and mental processes. They hold advanced degrees, typically a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.), specializing in various fields such as clinical psychology, counseling psychology, or neuropsychology. Psychologists utilize a range of assessment techniques and therapeutic interventions to help individuals, couples, or groups understand and address psychological challenges and improve their overall well-being.

Emily MacQuarrie is currently finishing her Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) training at the University of Prince Edward Island. Soon to be registered as a Clinical Psychologist in Supervised Practice with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.

Emily is eager to join the Virtual CBT team in September 2024. She will be providing online psychotherapy to people across Ontario.

She will be offering virtual psychotherapy services to adults across Ontario. Emily will be in supervised practice with Dr. Lauren Steinhart, Psy.D. C. Psych. Emily specializes in supporting adults navigating mood disorders, emotion dysregulation, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and OCD. 

Grounded in warmth and empathy, Emily takes an integrative and collaborative approach. Emily focuses on blending evidence-based practices with personalized strategies to fit each client’s needs. From an attachment perspective and developmental framework, Emily strives to help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves.

When not in the therapy room, Emily can be curled up with her two cats, camping with her partner, and experimenting with new recipes (often cheese or chocolate). She is currently trying to cultivate her green thumb.

Dr. Monaghan is a co-supervisor for Emily MacQuarrie’s practice. She is not available for direct booking but will oversee some of Emily’s clients Gen will be supervising Emily’s clients who are: teens. She will also be supervising clients who want a psychological assessment.

Dr. Monaghan is a registered Clinical Psychologist who obtained her doctoral degree from the University of Ottawa in 2018. She works with children, adolescents, and adults experiencing a range of problems including difficulties with mood and anxiety, eating disorders and body image concerns, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and emotional dysregulation, among others.

Dr. Monaghan has received training across evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and enhanced CBT for eating disorders (CBT-E), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT for PTSD), Solution-focused Family Therapy, among others.

Dr. Monaghan has also worked in diverse settings including hospital-based eating disorder, CBT and DBT programs, school boards, and various private institutions.

Throughout her Ph.D., Dr. Monaghan’s research focused on identifying cognitive antecedents to disordered eating behaviours and studying the impact of diet myths on behaviour, while developing a CBT-based group intervention to target these antecedents.

Dr. Monaghan’s treatment approach is rooted in evidence-based practice, and draws on established clinical practice guidelines and empirically supported treatments, while emphasizing client goals and needs. She strongly believes that collaboration between client and therapist is paramount, and that, at all times, the client is the expert in their experience.

In addition to her work with Evolve, Dr. Monaghan provides clinical consultation and training for the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program (OSP).

Outside of the office, Dr. Monaghan enjoys practicing yoga and downhill skiing, and spending as much time as possible with her family and their dogs!
